Pulmonary Rehabilitation
and Asthma Education
Pulmonary Rehabilitation, under the direction
of Pulmonary Services and located at Hendrick Medical Center, is an
individually tailored, multidisciplinary program provided to patients
with chronic lung diseases. The goal of this program is to return the
patient to the highest possible functional capacity allowed by his
or her disease process and overall life situation. This is accomplished
by helping patients become more knowledgeable about their pulmonary
disease, more actively involved in their own healthcare, more independent
in daily care activities, and less dependent on family, friends, and health
professionals.
Begun in January 1996, this program is comprised
of six weeks of exercise sessions combined with patient training classes,
in two groups of six to seven patients. Respiratory care practitioners
conduct the exercise sessions three times a week. Patient training
classes are conducted by various disciplines and include such topics
as nutrition, medication, breathing techniques and travel.
An exercise maintenance program is offered
two to three times a week, so patients may continue exercising after
graduating from the Rehab program.
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center is a
spacious area located at 1866 Pine Street, Suite B. The unit is equipped
with exercise equipment, monitors and emergency equipment. Hours of
operation are 8 AM until 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with the
center closed for observed Hendrick Medical Center holidays. For further

Certified Asthma Educators will provide one-on-one instruction and training on asthma self-management.
How we serve the community:
- Educate healthcare providers, family and community members on current asthma practices
- Offer presentations to nurses, school staff and PTAs on related childhood asthma issues
- Promote school-based asthma education with our KICK ASTHMA program
- Provide an annual summer asthma camp for area children with an asthma diagnosis thanks to the donations made through Children’s Miracle Network
